Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) simultaneously supports the multiple functions of agricultural production, ecosystem services and rural livelihoods within production landscapes. Although a wide variety of public and private funding and investment platforms exist, most investments related to land use are financed through sector-focused mechanisms (e.g. agricultural production, community development, etc.), leading to inefficiently achieved or unmet outcomes. To tackle this challenge, the the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature Initiative is working to better understand the ways in which financing mechanisms support ILM,  how actors within landscapes finance their activities and how existing models can be improved.

Initial findings from the analyses of financial institutions and landscapes along with a draft policy brief will be presented at the session. It will bring together a range of expertise on the topic to exchange knowledge and provide input on the study. The outcomes of the session will contribute to discussions on the first theme of the Global Landscapes Forum – Investing in Sustainable Landscapes and Livelihoods.

Three key sector- or issue-specific questions the panel will address:

1. What innovative finance models exist or could be developed to support ILM?

2. What are the gaps in current finance mechanisms and institutions that hinder ILM?

3. How do current integrated landscape initiatives take advantage of current finance models to support their efforts?
