There’s one thing you need to know about landscapes: it’s all connected.

But what is a landscape? Is it just a field of green grass, surrounded by snowy peaks and blue skies? It’s more than that—and this competition was people’s chance to show the connections!

In a landscape, different elements and actors come together— the air you breathe, the water you drink, the soil that you lay your steps on, the food that you eat, and even you yourself. More than that, landscapes are not only a geographic place – they are connected to important global processes like the Sustainable Development Goals and the new climate agenda that leaders are discussing in Paris.

About the competition

This competition was part of the Global Landscapes Forum that took place in Paris in December 2015, parallel to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21).

The event gathered more than 3,000 participants from all over the world, representing the private sector, NGOs, leading international organizations, government and the general public The online mobilization campaign reached millions through Twitter, Facebook and the event live webcast.

The photos reflect the connections that people found. aiming to show the missing link between a specific sustainable development goal and biodiversity, or climate change.
