Increasing production of food, fuel and fiber, in response to growing global demand, frequently has negative consequences for forests. The challenge of effectively managing landscapes to increase production while conserving forests is exemplified in Brazil – production of cattle, biofuels and soy are soaring, as is pressure to conserve remaining forests for their high carbon and biodiversity values. This session aims to engage participants to explore how cross-sectoral multi-stakeholder engagement and innovative governance solutions can contribute to meeting these challenges.

Founded on the shared belief that effective multi-stakeholder dialogues can help bridge forest and agriculture sector and provide more holistic insights into land-use challenges, a 4Fs partnership was formed by The Forests Dialogue and its partners for “better, fairer and more sustainable land use decision making”. Forty experts from multiple sectors and stakeholder groups convened in Brazil in November 2012. Here, dialogue participants will discuss some of the key challenges identified by the dialogue, which include: how to conduct integrated and participatory land-use planning; and how to support small and medium scale farming through a landscape approach.

Reducing deforestation associated with cattle ranching is a key challenge in Brazil. Among many emerging innovative governance solutions, the Sustainable Agriculture Network’s certification program sets new standards for environmental and social sustainability in the cattle sector. Here, CCAFS researchers will outline how they used a comparative research approach to explore the program’s contributions to enhanced sustainability.

This technical and networking session convenes experts from the private sector, NGOs, government agencies and research institutes. A combination of short presentations, panel discussion, and audience questions will stimulate debate around the key issues facing landscape-level management for multiple outcomes in Brazil.
